Add Alphanumeric Activity ID Column to a Microsoft Project Schedule (Updated)

27-Feb-21

Users of Primavera P6 who have to also use Microsoft Project usually complain about the lack of an alphanumeric Activity ID column in Microsoft Project. By default, Microsoft Project uses Line Number as ID but these Line Numbers are not permanently assigned to tasks (activities) in Microsoft and hence it becomes difficult to reference IDs as they change from schedule to schedule with new additions or deletions of task.

Though Microsoft Project has a Unique ID column, the IDs generated are numeric. The tutorial in this YouTube video is a workaround showing how to create an alphanumeric Activity ID column in Microsoft Project.

Following a comment on the video above from Natalia, I’ve produced a second video showing how to assign prefixes to Activity IDs based on project phases or other criteria.
